How hard can it be to find a decent hairbrush?

Monday, February 8, 2010

I'm in the market for a new hairbrush. I don't think my brush requirements are over-the-top:
  • must last at least couple of years
  • must not get tangled in my hair
  • must be easy to clean
  • must not cost more than $30
I currently have the Sephora Bamboo Nylon Paddle Brush - it's a nice brush, but not so nice that I want to buy another one. I've had it for 3 or 4 years, and the part that anchors the bristles (I'm sure there is a name for this, but I have no idea what it is called, LOL) now tends to pop out from the wooden brush in one spot. The brush is still functional, but it annoys me. The price was $32 when I bought mine, it now sells for $22.

Hair on the Brain has an article about Marie Claire's top 5 hair products and one of their picks is the Mason Pearson Junior BrushIt's touted as "a hairstylist’s best friend, these nylon-and-boar bristles make blowouts a breeze". Price $126. For a hairbrush. Yeah. If I spent $126 on a hairbrush, I'd expect it to wash, dry, & style my hair, buy me dinner, take me to a movie, & give me a massage. Honestly, I'd be embarrassed to have anyone find out that I'd spent that much money on a hairbrush. Call me cheap, but a hairbrush just can't be worth $126.

With a little more digging, I found out that there is a Sonia Kashuk brush available at Target that is supposed to be very similar to the Mason Pearson Junior Brush. It's called the Kashuk Tools® Bristle Hair Brush, and the price is $14.99. Now that's a price I can live with - and the brush can just be a brush! Most of the reviews are favorable, so I think I may pick this up on my next trip to Target. Of course, I have no way to compare it to the Mason Pearson brush, but as long as it meets my needs, I'll be a happy girl.

I'd love to hear if any of you have tried any of these brushes - or if you have another brush that you think is a must-have!

Thanks for saving me the trouble. I need a new brush. I'm so negligent when it comes to replacing them, but it's about that time. I hate trying to choose one, mainly because all the ones that look like what I'd really want cost $30+. I need to try the SK one. I usually don't like to pay more than $5 but the prices on the simplest brushes have gone beyond that anyway, so I might as well pay $15 for a good one.

If you decide to get it, let me know how you like it. I've always been pleased with the quality of other Sonia Kashuk products I've tried, so I have high hopes for this one as well!

Hi Kim;

Love your blog!! I've enjoyed reading it since the very first. ☺

I so agree about the Mason Pearson Brush. I know someone this is the only brush she uses. But, I've not used a "real" brush in years so I wasn't interested in this brush.

I use a vent brush called a Cricket/FAST FLO. I'ts has a red handle with black bristles and red tips. I've used it for many years. It's really easy to clean. I have three of them, I alternate.

I may check out the Kashuk brushes from Target next time I go.☺

I'm glad you're enjoying the blog!!

I bet you have fine hair, don't you? I can't use a vented brush like the Cricket Fast Flo because my hair is too thick & wavy. Brushes like that get tangled in my hair in no time - plus I can never seem to pull may hair taut enough to straighten it. But I think for people with fine/thin hair, a vented brush works very well.

never could justify the MP brush in my head either - I mean really. It is just a brush? Right? LIL. Of course maybe someday I will be able to try one, and it will be amazing..... we have no Target here, so can't try the Sk
